Growth marketing for consumer AI startups in New York, when great paid marketing is not enough.
new york has the deepest paid marketing bench in the country. it also has the narrowest one, and the gap is the part that costs consumer apps.
What new york is genuinely good at
new york took 14% of all US startup funding in 2025, second only to the bay area. the strength is concentrated in fintech, media, adtech and B2B software.
that is why the paid talent here is so strong. people have spent years buying ads for brands with real budgets and real pressure to prove results. if you want someone who can open your meta account and tell you which three ads are carrying the whole campaign, new york is full of them.
The gap that catches consumer AI founders
that same background creates one blind spot. direct to consumer growth assumes you can buy your way to volume, and for a $60 product with a 3x return, you can.
a consumer AI app at seed usually cannot. your price is lower, often zero at the top. it takes longer to make the money back. and your best early users tend to come from places you cannot buy at all, like a subreddit where people are already complaining about the exact problem you solve.
so you hire a strong paid person, the campaigns look clean, the numbers look fine, and growth still does not compound. paid was never going to be the whole answer.
What I do differently
i run paid and community together on purpose, because in this category they feed each other. the ads that work organically are usually the ads that work paid. reddit tells you what words people actually use before you pay to say them back.
i grew ZuAI from 10,000 to 2 million users at a $0.02 blended CAC on that combination. the reddit half is where most people get hurt, which is why i run it slowly. i lost more than forty of my own accounts learning where the line is.
Questions founders in New York ask
Do you work in person in new york?
no. i travel between san jose and new delhi, so new york work is remote and i am not going to pretend otherwise. growth work lives in shared ad accounts and written updates, so in practice this changes very little, but you should know it before you start.
We already have a good paid person. Do we need you?
maybe not. if your paid is working and you just want more of it, hire another paid person in new york and you will do well. i am useful when paid is fine but overall growth is flat, because that is usually a channel mix problem rather than a media buying problem.
Do you work with fintech or B2B?
rarely, and i will say so early. my experience is consumer apps, mostly AI ones. new york has plenty of fintech and B2B specialists who will beat me on those, and pointing you at them costs me nothing.
Bring one real growth problem. Leave with the fix.
