Growth marketing for consumer AI startups in Bengaluru, in the city with the most growth talent and the most competition for it.
bengaluru has more growth marketers than any other indian city. almost none of them have run a consumer app that charges in dollars and buys users in rupees.
The market, in numbers
bengaluru startups raised $4.6 billion across nearly 300 deals in 2025, more capital and more deals than any other indian city. capital into the city grew 35% year on year while indian startup funding overall fell 8%, to about $11 billion across 936 deals.
so the money is concentrating here while it thins everywhere else. that is good for raising and bad for hiring, because every funded company in the city is recruiting from the same pool at the same time.
Why the talent pool does not fit a seed consumer app
the growth marketers here mostly learned in one of two places, and neither is where you are.
the first is B2B SaaS sold to american buyers. that discipline is demand generation: long cycles, lead scoring, sales handoffs, a pipeline you can forecast. genuinely hard, genuinely valuable, and almost none of it transfers to an app someone deletes on day two.
the second is the big consumer platforms, the food delivery and commerce companies whose budgets are enormous. people from that world are used to spending more in a week than you have for the quarter, and the instincts they built are tuned to a scale you do not have yet.
what you need instead is someone who has had to make a small budget produce signal. those people are rare here because the market has not needed many of them.
The dollar-rupee problem nobody warns you about
this is specific to bengaluru and it breaks a lot of CAC maths.
a consumer AI app built here is usually priced in dollars for a global audience, while the cheapest early users to reach are indian. so your CAC comes from one market and your revenue assumption comes from another, and the blended number that results describes neither.
the fix is not complicated but it has to be deliberate: separate the economics by geography from the first week, not after the spreadsheet stops making sense. an indian install at a fraction of the cost and a fraction of the conversion is not automatically a worse buy, but you cannot know that from a blend.
What a full time hire costs here
a growth marketer in bengaluru averages ₹10.2 lakh a year on Glassdoor, with the middle of the market between ₹6.6 lakh and ₹15.6 lakh and the top decile at ₹24.2 lakh. the city runs about 13% above the indian average of ₹9 lakh.
against a US hire that looks cheap, and founders often stop the analysis there. the real cost is the same everywhere: three to five months before you can honestly judge whether the person was right, spent at the stage when you least know which channel matters.
find the channel first. then hire someone to run it, when the job has a shape and you can tell inside a month whether they are good at it.
Questions founders in Bengaluru ask
Do you work in person in bengaluru?
no. i travel between san jose and new delhi, so bengaluru work is remote. i would rather say that plainly than imply a local presence i do not have. the work lives in shared ad accounts and written weekly updates, which travels fine.
We are targeting the US from bengaluru. Does that change anything?
it changes almost everything about the numbers. your creative has to sound like it came from the market you are selling to, your cheapest test traffic is probably not that market, and the two facts fight each other. the honest first step is to price the difference rather than average it away, and to accept that cheap indian installs may be teaching you about a user who will never pay you.
Is an agency here a better option?
if you already know your channel and just need more of it, often yes, and bengaluru has real ones. before that point you are usually paying account managers to learn your product. i am one person doing the work, so there is no handoff, but i can only take a few companies at a time.
Bring one real growth problem. Leave with the fix.
the breakdown call is free. no pitch deck, no agency handoff.
