Consumer app growth marketer for B2C founders, the buyer is a person, so the method is different.
consumer growth marketing is not B2B growth with a smaller budget. the buyer decides in minutes, retention decides the business, and the cheapest users come from channels most B2B marketers never touch. one operator, inside your accounts, US founders first.
What consumer growth marketing actually is
three jobs, in this order. get a person to try the app. get them to come back. do both at a cost the business survives. every channel, every ad and every onboarding screen is a tactic under one of those three, and most consumer apps are stuck on the second one while spending on the first.
that order matters. a teen investing app i worked on hit 10,000 users and then showed day 7 retention of 5 percent. ninety-four of every hundred people we acquired were gone inside a week. the ads were fine. the funnel was fine. the product was fine. the users were just busy. no amount of acquisition fixes that, and pouring more in only makes the number louder. we rebuilt the product into ZuAI and the growth followed.
so the first question a consumer app growth marketer asks is not “which channel”. it is “do they come back”. if you have not measured that, measure it before you hire anyone, including me.
call it consumer app marketing, B2C app marketing or D2C app marketing, the job is the same: a person, not a procurement team, decides whether to install and whether to come back. consumer marketing for an app lives or dies on that second decision.
Four things that are different when the buyer is a person
the decision takes minutes, not quarters. nobody runs a procurement process on a $9 a month app. they see one video, they install, they either get a win in the first session or they leave. that means creative carries most of the weight, and the onboarding screen is half the ad.
organic comes first, and it is free research. the strongest consumer companies get at least half their signups from organic before paid scales. at ZuAI, organic was the testing ground: 30 videos a month, two or three moved, the rest died. we uploaded the winners as unlisted videos and ran them as ads. nothing got budget until it had already earned attention for free. the best performing ad in that account was shot three years ago by a college junior on a phone.
ugly beats polished. a $2,000 creator video did 12,000 views and close to zero users. a video of a girl on a video call with the app while eating fruit did 2 million, and it worked precisely because it did not look like an ad. B2B marketers arriving in consumer bring production values that actively hurt.
retention is the business, not a metric. in B2B a churned account is a sales problem. in consumer, day 7 retention decides whether the whole model works. it is the number i look at before anything else on the free call.
What a B2C growth marketer does in week one
days one and two: a full read of the funnel, the ad account history, the CAC maths and the creative graveyard. most apps have a graveyard, and it usually holds a winner nobody scaled.
days three and four: the map. which subreddits your users actually post in, which creative angles are worth a batch, and the order to test them.
days five to seven: the first batch goes live. execution starts in week one, not week six. every friday after that you get the numbers in writing: what we tested, what won, what died, what changes next week.
that is the same loop every consumer app runs, whatever the channel: analyze, execute, iterate, repeat. the AI app growth marketer page has the whole method, including why AI-native consumer apps add a twist of their own.
The channel mix that actually works for consumer apps
short form video at volume, because it is where a person decides. Reddit done the way that does not get you banned, because it is the cheapest quality traffic in any consumer mix and the only channel that tells you why anyone cares. the founder on camera, because you are the least copyable asset the company has. and paid, last, scaling only what organic has already proven.
the Reddit part cost 40+ banned accounts to learn. it is published free as the SAFE Reddit playbook. the UGC and paid methods are in the playbook library too. the method is public. what you hire is the execution.
Fractional, agency, or full time
a full time consumer growth lead in the US costs $150,000 to $250,000 a year before equity and takes a quarter to ramp. right when you have found the channel and need someone to own it for years.
an agency gives you a team and an account manager between you and the work. right when you have budget and want scale on channels that already work.
an embedded operator, which is what i am, sits between the two. one senior person, inside your accounts, from week one, three founders at a time for six months each. right when you have a product people come back to and no repeatable channel yet.
the honest fit is narrow and the services page says who it is not for. B2B, enterprise SaaS and pre-product founders should not book the call, and if you do, i will say so on it.
What founders ask
What is the difference between a consumer app growth marketer and a B2B one?
The buyer. In consumer, one person decides in minutes and either comes back or does not. In B2B a committee decides in months. Consumer growth is creative volume, organic channels and retention. B2B growth is pipeline, sales enablement and long attribution. Hiring across the line wastes a quarter.
How much does a B2C growth marketer cost?
A full time consumer growth lead in the US runs $150,000 to $250,000 a year before equity. Fractional and embedded operators are scoped monthly. The breakdown call is free and tells you which you need, or whether you are too early for either.
What is consumer growth marketing, in one sentence?
Getting a person to try an app, then getting them to come back, at a cost the business can afford. Everything else is a tactic under one of those three.
Should a consumer app start with paid or organic?
Organic. The strongest consumer companies get at least half their signups organic before paid scales. Organic is also the free testing ground: what wins there becomes the paid ad. Paid first means paying to learn what free would have told you.
Do you work with consumer apps that are not AI products?
Yes. Most of my current founders build consumer AI apps because that is where the market is, but the method is the same for any B2C app where a person decides and retention is the business. Enterprise SaaS is the one thing I do not do.
Tell me the growth problem.
one operator, not an agency. i read every one of these myself and reply from my own inbox.
Bring one real growth problem. Leave with the fix.
the breakdown call is free. no pitch deck, no agency handoff.
