Growth marketer, growth hacker, fractional CMO, agency: what you are actually buying

Four labels, one question. Priced against the same job to be done instead of defined in the abstract.

the short answer: these four labels do not describe four skill levels, they describe four different things you can buy. the useful question is not what the words mean, it is which one matches the job you actually have. most of the confusion comes from founders buying one and needing another.

The four, by what they produce

growth hacker. the 2010 term, coined by sean ellis, for someone who blends marketing, product and engineering to find scalable acquisition. in 2026 the word mostly signals that whoever used it learned the field a while ago. some genuinely good operators still use it. so do most of the people selling shortcuts.

growth marketer. the modern term for the same function. produces experiments, channels, and creative. the person most seed to series A companies actually need.

fractional CMO. produces strategy, positioning, hiring plans and org design, part-time. does not run the ad account. this is the most commonly mis-bought item on the list, because founders hear “senior marketing person, part time” and expect execution.

agency. produces capacity across several channels at once, with a team and account management. execution at breadth.

Priced against the same job

say the job is: figure out which two channels work for a consumer app, build a creative system that keeps producing winners, and fix the worst funnel drop-off.

growth marketer or operator, $3,000 to $20,000 a month. fits. this is exactly the job description.

fractional CMO, $5,000 to $20,000 a month or $200 to $500 an hour. does not fit. they will tell you which two channels to test and then expect someone else to run the tests. worth every penny when your problem is that nobody owns marketing strategy. wasteful when your problem is that nobody is producing ads.

agency, $5,000 to $15,000 a month. fits partially. you will get the channels run. the creative system tends not to survive the engagement, because it lives in their process rather than yours.

freelancer, $100 to $300 an hour. fits the execution half. you supply the diagnosis.

The question that sorts it

do you know what should happen, or do you need someone to work that out?

if you know, buy execution: freelancer or agency, whichever matches the volume.

if you do not know, buy diagnosis and execution in the same person, because the handoff between those two is where most engagements lose their value. that is the operator model, and its genuine limitation is capacity.

if what you do not know is strategic rather than tactical, positioning, pricing, which market, buy a fractional CMO and do not expect them to run the account.

What every label hides

none of them tell you who does the work. ask directly. “who specifically will be in the ad account, and what happens if they are unavailable for two weeks.”

none of them tell you about decision speed. growth work generates constant small decisions, and an arrangement where each waits three days for a scheduled call produces far less than a cheaper one where they happen immediately.

none of them tell you what remains afterwards. if the answer is a report, you rented outcomes. if it is a documented testing system your team can run, you bought an asset.

My bias, stated

i am the operator option, so weigh this accordingly.

against my own model: if you need five channels running from next week, an agency is genuinely correct and i would say so. if you know exactly what to build, a good freelancer costs less and does the same job. if your real problem is that nobody has decided what the company’s marketing position is, i am the wrong hire entirely.

the operator case is narrower than the category’s marketing suggests. it is best when nobody has worked out what should be happening yet, and you want the person working that out to also be the person doing it.

the same three options priced against one concrete ninety day scope are in agency, freelancer, or one operator. if you want yours sorted honestly, let’s talk.
