What a growth marketer actually costs in 2026

Google answers this with salary data. Founders are asking about engagement cost. Here are the real ranges for freelance, fractional and agency growth help.

the short answer: search “how much does a growth marketer cost” and google shows you salary data, because it thinks you are hiring an employee. most founders asking are not. they want to know what an engagement costs. the honest ranges in 2026: $100 to $300 an hour freelance, $3,000 to $20,000 a month on retainer, and $5,000 to $20,000 a month for fractional leadership. here is what sits behind those numbers and which one you actually need.

Why every page you found was unhelpful

the pages ranking for this question are written by companies that cannot answer it. a marketplace cannot publish real rates without undercutting its own take. an agency cannot without losing pricing power. the best cost guide currently ranking says outright that its pricing reflects market observation rather than validated research, then recommends its own mentor network.

so you get salary tables. useful if you are writing a job description, useless if you are deciding whether to spend $6,000 next month.

The four ways to buy growth, and what each costs

employee. roughly $70,000 to $130,000 for a specialist and $95,000 to $175,000 for a manager in the US, plus equity, plus three to five months to hire, plus the risk that you cannot evaluate the hire until they have started. good if growth is a permanent function and you have runway to be patient.

freelancer, hourly. $100 to $300 an hour, with $175 to $300 typical for someone with seven to fifteen years of experience. good for a defined piece of work. bad as a standing arrangement, because hourly billing quietly incentivises hours rather than outcomes.

operator or consultant, monthly retainer. $3,000 to $20,000 a month, with paid acquisition specialists usually $2,000 to $8,000 plus your ad budget. this is the range most seed to series A consumer apps land in. what changes across that spread is scope, not seniority: one channel validated versus the whole engine run.

fractional CMO. $200 to $500 an hour or $5,000 to $20,000 a month. worth it when your problem is that nobody owns the strategy. wasteful when your problem is that nobody is producing enough ads, because a fractional CMO will tell you that and then delegate it back to you.

agency. typically $5,000 to $15,000 a month. buys you capacity and coverage. the tradeoff founders keep discovering late is that the person who sold you the engagement is rarely the person doing the work.

What actually moves the price

three things, in this order.

scope. validating one channel over ten days costs a fraction of running acquisition end to end. the honest question is not “what do you charge” but “what am i handing over.”

your ad budget. below roughly $10,000 a month in test spend, most consumer channels cannot produce a signal fast enough for anyone to be worth paying. that is not a sales gate, it is arithmetic: if only about 5% of creatives win, you need enough spend to run enough tests to find them. one competitor in this space puts the floor at $10,000 to $20,000 a month and i think that is fair for B2B.

whether you need the person or the system. paying for someone’s hours is expensive and does not compound. paying for a system that keeps producing winners after they leave is the thing worth buying, and the way to tell is whether they hand over documented pass or fail criteria or just results.

What I charge and why I do not publish a rate card

the breakdown call is free. sprints and monthly retainers get scoped on that call.

i do not publish a fixed number because the honest one depends on whether you want a single channel validated or the whole engine run, and quoting before seeing your funnel would be guessing. what i can tell you is the shape: you start small, there is no lock-in, and if a ten day sprint says your channel fails, you get that in writing and keep the learnings.

The question worth asking instead

not “what does a growth marketer cost.” ask “what does one month of not fixing this cost.” if you are spending $20,000 a month at a CAC that does not work, the growth engagement is cheaper than the burn it stops. if you are spending nothing and nobody retains yet, the cheapest correct answer is to hire nobody and fix retention first.

i turn away work on that basis regularly. it is the least profitable and most useful thing i say on calls.

if you want the arithmetic run on your actual numbers, let’s talk.
