Hiring a growth marketer in the Bay Area: when local actually matters

Two cases where being in the same place genuinely helps, and the several where paying a Bay Area premium buys you nothing.

the short answer: growth work is almost entirely done inside shared accounts and written updates, so location matters far less than the Bay Area salary premium implies. there are two real exceptions, and outside them you are paying for proximity you will not use.

i am in san jose, so read this with the appropriate scepticism. i have written the argument against my own geography where it applies.

Where local genuinely helps

early-stage, pre-clarity work. if nobody has decided what the product is for yet, the highest-value sessions are long, messy and in person. whiteboard conversations where the positioning gets argued out do not survive being compressed into a call. that phase is short, usually weeks, and it is the strongest case for being in the same room.

when the growth function has to be built into the team. if the outcome you want is that your own people can run this after the engagement, sitting next to them while they learn it works better than documentation. this is a training problem more than a marketing one, and training benefits from proximity.

outside those two, i would not pay a premium for it.

Where it does not matter at all

the ad accounts. access is access. i can see the same thing from anywhere and so can you.

the creative pipeline. briefs, review and iteration happen in shared documents. the creators are rarely local to anyone.

the reporting. the weekly written update is better than a meeting for this specific purpose, because numbers benefit from being read rather than presented.

community and reddit work. the communities are not geographic.

What actually matters more than location

timezone overlap, but less than you think. four hours of overlap is plenty. the work is asynchronous by nature and the decisions that need synchronous time are a weekly session, not daily standups.

category experience. someone who has run consumer AI apps from another continent is worth more to you than someone local who has only done B2B SaaS. this is not close.

decision speed. an arrangement where small decisions happen immediately produces more in ninety days than one where they queue for a scheduled call, and that is about how you work together rather than where you are.

The Bay Area premium, honestly

a good growth lead here costs $150,000 to $250,000 plus equity as an employee, and rates follow that upward. some of that premium reflects genuine density of experience: there are more people here who have scaled consumer products, so the pool is better.

some of it is just cost of living passed through, and you are not buying anything with that portion.

if you are hiring locally, you should be buying the first thing. the test is whether the person has actually worked on products like yours, not whether they can meet you for coffee.

Where I actually land

i am in san jose and it is occasionally useful. bay area founders can meet in person for the early messy sessions, and that genuinely helps in the first weeks.

most of my work is with founders i have never met in person, across the US and europe, and it goes fine. if you are choosing between me and someone in another timezone with better category fit for your product, take the category fit. i would.

if you want to figure out which you actually need, let’s talk. coffee is available if you are close by, and it makes no difference to the work.
