The five channels I stopped recommending in 2026
Not because they never worked. Because the mechanism that made them work changed, and the date it changed is knowable.
the short answer: five things i used to recommend and now do not, each with the specific change that killed it and the date. none of these died because of taste or fashion. in every case a platform changed a rule and the tactic stopped clearing the bar.
1. High-volume cold email
what changed: on 5 may 2025 google, yahoo and microsoft moved bulk sender requirements from recommended to enforced. spam complaints must stay under 0.3%, authentication has to be aligned, and DMARC set to none is no longer sufficient.
why it matters: failing mail in 2026 does not land in spam, it does not arrive. the practical ceiling is roughly twenty to fifty sends per mailbox per day on aged domains, and considerably less on new ones.
what i recommend instead: far lower volume, genuinely researched, from a domain you are willing to protect. it is a different activity with a different economic model, and treating it as a volume channel is what damages the domain you will need later.
2. Product Hunt as a growth channel
what changed: featured status now goes to roughly 10% of launches, down from somewhere between 60 and 98% in 2020 to 2023. featured status determines most of the outcome, and outside the top ten a launch typically produces fewer than 500 visitors.
why it matters: the effort a good launch takes has not fallen, but the expected return has, and it is now a lottery rather than a channel.
what i recommend instead: launch if you have an audience that will show up, because then it compounds something you already have. do not build a quarter’s plan around it.
3. ASO keyword stuffing
what changed: metadata stuffing stopped producing ranking lift. the app store algorithm now weights rating recency heavily and factors behavioural signals including retention, session frequency and engagement depth. two apps with identical metadata rank differently based on what users do after installing.
why it matters: the entire category of service built on keyword field optimisation is selling work with no remaining mechanism.
what i recommend instead: custom product pages, which produced 23% more downloads on identical spend across more than a million ad groups, and retention work, which now buys ranking directly.
4. Reddit at volume
what changed: enforcement scaled sharply. reddit blocks roughly 23 million spam views a day and catches about 25,000 spam posts and comments daily, added selective human verification in march 2026, and runs a contributor quality score that gates posting independently of karma.
why it matters: the version of reddit marketing that involved several accounts and a posting schedule is now reliably fatal rather than merely risky.
what i recommend instead: one real account, genuine participation, product mentions that get pulled out of you. slower and it still works. i wrote the whole method out in the SAFE reddit playbook.
5. Chasing TikTok virality
what changed: new videos are shown to existing followers first and only promoted beyond them after clearing that cohort. broad accidental reach is fading.
why it matters: the strategy of posting frequently and hoping something breaks out has a much worse expected value than it did two years ago.
what i recommend instead: searchable, niche, high-completion content, and paid amplification behind things that already performed organically. that ordering, paid following proof rather than leading it, is the same rule that held the ZuAI blended CAC at $0.02 across the climb to 2M users.
The pattern worth extracting
every one of these died the same way: a platform closed a gap that had been open, and the tactic depended on the gap rather than on anything durable.
that is the argument for building a testing system rather than collecting tactics. tactics have expiry dates you do not get told about. a system that finds new ones does not.
the full ledger of what died, survived and replaced them is in growth hacking in 2026.
if you want your current channel mix audited against this list, let’s talk.
