Growth hacking in 2026: what died, what survived, what replaced it

A dated ledger rather than a listicle. Cold email, Product Hunt and ASO keyword stuffing are genuinely dead. Here is what killed each one and what took its place.

the short answer: most “growth hacking in 2026” articles are the same twenty tactics from 2018 with the year changed. this is a ledger instead: what actually stopped working, with the date and the mechanism, what still works, and what opened up. if you only read one section, read the dead one, because that is where budgets are still being spent.

for the separate argument about whether the discipline itself is still real, see growth hacking is still real in 2026. this post assumes it is and asks what changed.

Dead

high-volume cold email. on 5 may 2025 google, yahoo and microsoft moved bulk sender requirements from recommended to enforced: spam complaints under 0.3%, authentication aligned, DMARC at quarantine or reject rather than none. failing mail in 2026 does not land in spam, it does not arrive. the practical ceiling is now roughly twenty to fifty sends per mailbox per day on aged domains and far less on new ones. the tools promising thousands of sends are selling you deliverability damage.

Product Hunt as a growth channel. featured status now goes to roughly 10% of launches, down from 60 to 98% in 2020 to 2023, and featured status determines most of the outcome. outside the top ten a launch typically produces fewer than 500 visitors. investors increasingly read “number one on Product Hunt” with no activation numbers attached as a negative signal.

app store keyword stuffing. metadata stuffing no longer produces ranking lift. the algorithm now weights rating recency aggressively and factors behavioural signals, so two apps with identical metadata rank differently based on what users do after installing.

reddit spray and pray. reddit’s systems now block around 23 million spam views daily and catch roughly 25,000 spam posts and comments a day, with selective human verification added in march 2026.

the viral lottery on TikTok. new videos are shown to existing followers first and promoted beyond them only after passing that test. broad accidental virality is fading; searchable niche content with high completion is the durable reach.

Survived

structured experimentation. the mechanism never changed: run a test, kill the loser, compound the winner. what changed is the half-life. platform gaps close in months now, which makes throughput the asset rather than any single experiment.

creative volume. brands testing ten or more concepts a month achieve 31% lower cost per acquisition than those testing fewer than five, from an analysis of over 500,000 ads and more than $1B in spend. this is the most reliably underpriced lever in the list.

retention loops. more so than ever, because retention now buys distribution directly through store ranking signals.

community, done as participation rather than extraction. slower than every alternative and the only one that has survived every platform change on this page.

Replaced

search traffic, by AI answers. 68.01% of google searches ended without a click between january and april 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. pew research found users clicked a result 8% of the time when an AI summary was present versus 15% without, across 68,000 queries. google disputes that methodology, and the direction still holds. planning on organic clicks as a growth channel now requires planning for a much smaller share of them.

app store discovery, by behavioural ranking. retention and engagement depth are inputs now, which collapses the wall between the product team and the growth team.

the launch moment, by continuous distribution. with Product Hunt compressed and press thinner, the single-day launch spike is a worse bet than a channel you run every week.

and something genuinely new: distribution inside AI assistants. openai began accepting third-party app submissions in early 2026, putting a surface in front of roughly 800 million weekly users, larger than the apple app store’s installed base. apple is adding a second search results ad placement in march 2026. both are cold-start land grabs, which is historically the exact condition that produced the canonical growth wins everyone still cites.

What to do with this

audit your current plan against the dead column first. in most teams i talk to, at least one line item is still funded there.

then check whether your creative throughput is anywhere near the benchmark of one new ad per $3,000 of monthly spend. at ZuAI i ran 150+ creatives a month against roughly $300k in spend, about 1.5x that rate, and the $0.02 blended CAC was the output of that volume rather than a trick.
