How to recover from a Reddit shadowban

Confirm it is actually a shadowban

open a private browsing window, stay logged out, and go to your profile url. if your posts and comments are visible while logged in and gone while logged out, you are shadowbanned. for a second opinion, post in r/ShadowBan, where a bot checks your visibility and replies.

diagnose before you act. the fix for an AutoMod filter is a polite modmail. the fix for a shadowban is an admin appeal. sending the wrong one wastes the only quiet, reasonable first contact you get.

The one appeal that works

file one appeal at reddit.com/appeals, short, polite, and honest about the pattern that got you flagged. the shape that works has three parts: what you did, stated plainly. why you understand it looked like spam. what you have already stopped doing.

that shape works because admins read a wall of appeals claiming innocence, and the rare one that names its own pattern is believable in a way no protest ever is. “i posted the same link into four subreddits in one afternoon, i understand why that tripped the spam systems, i have stopped and will build history before posting links again” is a stronger appeal than any argument about your intentions.

then wait, in silence, without touching the account. an appeal is a claim that you have stopped. activity while it sits in the queue is evidence that you have not.

Why aggressive appeals and workarounds make it terminal

every move that feels like fighting back makes the outcome worse. repeated appeals, angry appeals and demands for specifics mark you as noise and close the door on the one review you were owed. a shadowban is Reddit saying the account’s pattern looked like spam, and everything you do next either contradicts that read or confirms it.

the workarounds are worse than the appeals. opening a second account to keep posting while the first is shadowbanned is ban evasion, which Reddit punishes harder than whatever you did originally. it connects accounts through device and network signals, writing style, and the communities you return to, and when it links them you usually lose both, permanently. the same goes for posting through the shadowban on the theory that consistency will be rewarded. nobody can see it, and it reads as a spammer who never stopped.

When to accept it and rebuild

accept it when the appeal has been met with several weeks of silence, or when your own honest audit says the account existed mostly to promote. in that second case the appeal was always a long shot, because the pattern Reddit saw was real, and the useful response is to fix the pattern, not to mourn the account.

How long should I wait after the appeal

give it several weeks before concluding anything. some appeals get an answer in days, many never get one at all, and silence past a month is, in practice, the answer.

Can I keep using the account while I wait

you can, but nothing you write is visible to anyone, and continued activity undercuts the appeal you just filed. complete silence is the only move that helps.

Does a new username on the same laptop count as a rebuild

no. accounts get linked by device, network and behavior, not by name. a rebuild is a different pattern, not a different username, and the pattern is the part that takes weeks.
