ChatGPT Ads for app installs: the honest state of it, and what to run instead

app install campaigns are not really available yet despite what the API docs imply. here is what actually works for an app today, and how to be ready.

the short version: if you are trying to run App Store install campaigns on ChatGPT Ads today, you will probably find you cannot, and the documentation will make you think you should be able to. this is what is actually true and what to do in the meantime.

The confusing part

the Conversions API defines app_installed and app_opened events with a mobile app action source. reading that, you would reasonably conclude app campaigns are supported.

but in the self-serve beta, the data sources inside Ads Manager listed Web, iOS and Android with only Web actually selectable. so the events exist in the API surface while the campaign type is not fully exposed in the interface.

check your own account before planning anything, because this is moving quickly and India self-serve only opened on 4 september. but do not build a quarter’s plan on an API reference alone.

What to run instead: web to app

this is not a workaround, it is how most large subscription apps acquire users anyway.

you send ChatGPT Ads traffic to a web page rather than a store listing. that page does the qualifying and often the selling, and the user lands in the app already converted. you get three things the store route does not give you:

Real conversion tracking. the web pixel works properly, which means the conversion objective is available to you. going straight to a store listing means handing off to attribution you do not control at the exact moment the system needs a signal.

Control of the message. a store listing has to serve everyone. a landing page can answer the specific question the person just asked ChatGPT, which is the whole advantage of this channel.

Better economics on subscriptions. taking payment on the web rather than in-app changes what you keep, which for a subscription business is not a small detail.

the mechanics of building one are in the web to app playbook, including when it is the wrong choice.

If you must send traffic to the store

you can still run CPC traffic campaigns pointing at a store listing. you just lose conversion optimisation, so treat it as a traffic buy and judge it on what your own attribution tells you rather than on what Ads Manager reports.

if you do this, your store listing is now your landing page and it is doing work it was not designed for. the first two screenshots carry almost all of it. the app store conversion calculator splits your funnel into the two steps that matter and tells you which one is leaking, and the app store optimization playbook covers the fixes.

one specific thing: match the first screenshot to the ad. someone who clicked an ad about one particular problem and lands on a generic listing has just been given a reason to hesitate, and hesitation is where installs die.

How to be ready for when it does ship

wire the Conversions API now, including app_installed and app_opened, even though you cannot select the campaign type yet. server side tracking takes longer to get right than people expect, and the advertisers who benefit first when a channel opens are the ones who were already instrumented.

work out your numbers in advance too. the break-even CAC calculator gives you the most you can pay per user, and for a subscription app the free trial to paid calculator shows the multiplier most founders miss: at 20% trial conversion, a ₹300 trial actually costs you ₹1,500 per paying customer.

The honest summary

ChatGPT Ads is a strong channel for apps right now, but through the web, not through the store. that is slightly more work to set up and it is also the better long term architecture, so the constraint is pushing you somewhere you probably wanted to go anyway.

the rest of the app growth system is in the full playbook library: sixteen channels including paid ads, UGC and app store optimization.

Sources: the app event definitions and the Web-only data source limitation are documented in OpenAI’s conversion-optimized campaigns guidance and reported in Choice OMG’s August 2026 field guide.
